Certificate of Occupancy

The Certificate of Occupancy (CO) is the building’s “identification card” permitting what is allowed to be used. This document is often used by many in different industries (real estate agents, banks, NYS agencies, etc.), to determine the legal occupancy and use of a building and space.

Not all buildings have a Certificate of Occupancy (CO), but in order to update, revise, and/or obtain a new Certificate of Occupancy an Alteration Type-I (ALT-CO) application must be filed with the Department of Buildings.

Alteration Type I (ALT-CO)

Formerly called Alteration Type-I applications, now called Alteration-Certificate of Occupancy (ALT-CO), these applications are required for any changes to the existing Certificate of Occupancy, and/or change the occupancy or use of a building, and will result in the issuance of a new Certificate of Occupancy.

Alteration Type-II & III (Work Type)

Formerly known as Alteration Type(s) II & III, these types of filings cover most general work types needed in a construction project.

  • General Construction, (GC)

  • Plumbing, Sprinkler, Standpipe (PL, SP, SD)

  • Mechanical Systems, Boiler Equipment (MS, BE)
